BIO
T.J. Jourian is an independent scholar, consultant, and coach with 20 years of experience in equity and inclusion work at hundreds of campuses, companies, conferences, and community-based organizations across Turtle Island. Through Trans*Formational Change, he helps organizations, changemakers, leaders, and individuals align with their purpose and move towards equity with courage, integrity, and creativity. He is committed to being informed by and center the leadership, knowledge, and priorities of those most in the margins, with particular attention to trans and queer people of color’s experiences, perspectives, and leadership in his practice, advocacy, and scholarship
Dr. Jourian’s professional experiences span LGBTQ life, residential life, women’s center work, multicultural affairs, orientation, student leadership, event coordination at a regional religious nonprofit, instructional design, and he has also been a faculty member at five institutions in their higher education and student affairs programs. His research examines race, gender, and sexuality in higher education, with particular attention to masculinity, transness, and racialization; campus gender and sexuality centers and practitioners; and trans*ing constructs and methodologies. As a predominantly qualitative researcher, Dr. Jourian’s methodological expertise include interdisciplinary, collaborative/participatory, narrative inquiry, phenomenology, and critical methodologies.
Studying how trans masculine college students conceptualize masculinity, Dr. Jourian earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education at Loyola University of Chicago, and both his MA in Student Affairs Administration with a Multicultural Education cognate and BA in General Management at Michigan State University.
